Who: Scorpion or Shang Tsung vs. Anyone Revision: 3.1 How: As Scorpion: On the winning round, make it so that the opponent is one hit away from losing. Position yourself in the corner with your back against the wall and have the opponent stand beside you on the opposite side. Example: ╔═══════════════════════╗ ║ ║s ║ ║c ║ ║r ║ ║e ║ Scorpion/Shang ║e ║ / Opponent ║n ║ / / ║ ║S O ║ ║///////////////////////║ ╚═══════════════════════╝ Have both Scorpion and the opponent jump straight up, then throw the opponent with Scorpion's Air Throw. This will send the opponent into the corner. They have to be thrown into the corner, or the glitch won't work. Immediately after the Air Throw, have the opponent hold Down and rapidly tap HK (any low attack will work, but HK works best). You may also substitute the crouched HK with an uppercut, but the low HK will give you more time to pull off a finisher. Now, at the same time, have Scorpion execute his Babality at the exact same time as he lands. If done correctly, Scorpion will perform his Babality and the opponent will kick (or uppercut) him out of his win pose right before he is turned into a baby. This will enable Scorpion to perform one of the following: - Babality - Friendship - Dead Pool Fatality (baby will still be present) As Shang Tsung: Do the same as above while morphed into Scorpion. If timed correctly, as soon as Tsung morphs back into himself, you may perform one of the following: - Baraka's Blades of Fury (crashes game) - Cage's Split Punch (baby will hover an inch from ground) - Throwing the baby will cause it to shoot straight up GLITCH #3 What: Evade Reptile's Force Orb. Who: Anyone vs. Reptile Revision: Any How: Perform a crouched high kick right before Reptile's Force Orb hits you. If timed correctly, it will just explode in front of you and you will take no damage. ╔──────────────────────╗ ─┤ 9.8 - Facts & Rumors ├──────────────────────────────────────────────────── ╚──────────────────────╝ HORNBUCKLE Claim: Fight Hornbuckle Status: False In the background of The Pit II stage, there is another bridge across the chasm. Standing stationary on this bridge are two fighters; one of them is a color-swap of Liu Kang, who is wearing pants with green trim. Fans dubbed this character 'Hornbuckle'. This rumor originated from the SNES version and not the arcade. Here's why: 1) One of Jade's messages ("Chun Who?") was changed to "Hornbuckle Who?" in the SNES version. 2) There is a Leanne Hornbuckle listed in the credits of the SNES version. There is no mention of her in the arcade version, however. 3) The first mention of Hornbuckle appeared on alt.games.mk two days before MKII was released on consoles; the individual claimed to have seen Jade's "Hornbuckle Who?" clue at Sears while the game was on display. TORCH Claim: Fight Torch Status: False The second fighter in the background of The Pit II stage was dubbed Torch by fans. The character of Torch, who had been very popular with fans, eventually showed up as a playable character in "Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance". Unfortunately, due to trademark issues, he had to be called Blaze instead of Torch. SCARLET Claim: Fight Scarlet, a red female ninja Status: False Scarlet was allegedly a red color-swap of Kitana and Mileena that players could somehow access through the so-called "Hidden Forest" stage. CLOAK Claim: Fight Cloak Status: False There is a cloaked figure who floats in front of the window during fights in The Tower and Portal stages in MKII. This character was dubbed Cloak by fans, and was assumed to be a hidden character. The true identity of Cloak was revealed in "Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks" to be one of Shang Tsung's servants, a shadow priest. SPECIAL/FINISHING MOVES Many people claim to have seen Sub-Zero morph into a polar bear, which some believe is why he was given the polar bear Animality in MK3. Scorpion could allegedly morph into a scorpion. Some claim to have seen Shang Tsung morph into Shao Kahn. It has been said that you could uppercut your opponent into the trees -- the very last tree on the far right according to some reports -- and they're either eaten or strangled by this tree. You could allegedly uppercut your opponent on the Dead Pool stage so that they landed on one of the hooks. While they hung from the hook, it pulled it down, thus opening one of the elevator-like doors on the sides of the stage. And then, as the doors opened, Kano would come out and do something in particular. This is one of the more far-fetched rumors. ROM HACKS A red dragon (Liu Kang) and a 'bones in a hat' (Kung Lao) fatality are said to exist in one of the arcade ROM hacks. RARE GAME OVER SCREEN Like the first Mortal Kombat, this game also contains a rare 'GAME OVER' screen. Normally the screen says 'GAME OVER' and shows the Wasteland as the backdrop. The rare screen, however, says 'GAME OVER ?', uses Goro's Lair as the backdrop, and displays a large Roman numeral 'III' in red. SECRET CREDITS SCREEN Beat the game in under 5 credits and you will be presented with a screen featuring mugshots of Ed Boon, John Tobias, Dan Forden and Tony Goskie. WINNING MESSAGES Upon defeating Shao Kahn you will receive the following message: "[KOMBATANT] WINS" "SHAO KAHN'S RULE IS OVER" "ONCE AGAIN YOU ARE THE SURPREME MORTAL KOMBAT WARRIOR !!" "WHERE IS GORO ?" ┌─────────────────┐ ─┘ 9.10-2 - Trivia └────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── CONCEPTION Jax started as an African-American kick-boxer, but this idea was discarded due to similarities to Balrog from "Street Fighter II". He later donned a yellow costume with big metal hands that clanged upon impact. This outfit, however, concealed much of actor John Parrish's impressive physique, so Jax went shirtless.[33] The original idea for Jax centered around a Special Forces member named Curtis Stryker during MK1's development.[150] He was cut from the original roster and replaced with Sonya Blade after the developers decided on adding a female character.[151] Sonya was given Stryker's Special Forces background due to its importance with Kano.[152] Stryker was brought back in MKII and was renamed to Jax, while the Stryker name was used for an entirely different character in MK3.[153] Actor/martial artist Steve James served as inspiration for Jax.[106] The mutant Baraka was originally a humanoid with sharp protrusions growing from his massive arms. Considering a possible unfair reach advantage, Tobias gave him Wolverine-style retractable blades and added the trademark teeth. Refining the look further, Baraka's head was shaved for a more 'Nosferatu' look. A stylish red dot on his belt buckle in early renditions, which people misinterpreted as symbolizing Japan, was also axed.[33] The original mask used for Baraka was not used in the game due to the fact that it was disproportionately large and didn't fit well. Instead, a Nosferatu mask was purchased from a nearby costume shop and equipped with teeth made from silver-painted Lee Press-On Nails.[31] In yet another early rendition of Baraka, he was a masked, bald fighter that wielded hookswords.[33] In an early build of the game, Baraka had a Blade Spin move.[34] It was most likely removed for balance. He regained the move in Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Johnny Cage originally had "Otomix" written on the side of his pants. The reason for its removal in the final game is unknown. Due to a goof by the developers, the text is still visible on a couple frames during Shang Tsung's Soul Taker Fatality. Everyone in the Outworld was planned to be of Baraka's race, and thus Shao Kahn started with the gnashing teeth. Tobias originally conceived the boss as a skeletal creature, but decided Kahn looked too much the part of the scheming Chinese mystic like Shang Tsung. Kahn evolved into an all-out-warrior who lives for battle. Tobias even sketched out the armor that would be used to create the costume.[33] At one point John Tobias was going to add a staff to Raiden's arsenal, but there wasn't enough computer memory to allow it.[33] Kitana started out as a character named Kitsune in MK1 and was going to fit into the story as Shang Lao’s (Tsung’s) princess daughter.[126][128] As it was, 'Kitsune' didn't make sense as a name to John Tobias because it was Japanese in origin, while 'Shang' and 'Shao' were both Chinese in origin.[131] So it was changed to 'Kitana' after someone suggested the name 'Katana' (after the sword), which didn't make sense to John, either. Thus, 'Kitana' is a combination of both names.[132] 'Kitsune' was originally inspired by the game "Karateka" (1984), which John played on the Apple IIc during his freshman year of high school.[130] Kintaro was originally planned as a fully playable tiger-like humanoid based on the Japanese mythological figure of the same name. According to legend, he was abandoned in the mountains and grew up among the tigers. However, this idea was scrapped because creating the costume wasn't feasible. But, thanks to this original concept, the Shokan's name and tiger stripes were retained.[33] Tobias wanted to add a character based on real-life kick-boxer Kathy Long, who he admired and thought to be a noble person. She was dropped due to time constraints.[33] LEGAL ISSUES Three of the cast members from MKII filed a lawsuit against Midway shortly after the game was released. The claim? The physical instructors/martial artists Elizabeth Malecki (Sonya Blade), Katalin Zamiar (Kitana/Mileena) and Dr. Philip Ahn (Shang Tsung) were under the impression that they were hired under typical acting contracts and were entitled to a small modicum of benefits including royalties of title sales. The plaintiffs banded together against Midway, who took the case to court. The judge ruled in Midway's favor, citing that the work done by the plaintiffs for Midway was done strictly as a 'work-for-hire' and Midway owned all the property and benefits on the characters, titles, et cetera. As a consequence, all three left the project and were recast for Mortal Kombat 3. FIRSTS This game was the first Midway release to feature the DCS Sound System. First game in the series to feature 'Babalities' and 'Friendships'. MISCELLANEOUS FACTS According to John Tobias, the symbols on Kung Lao's shirt and Raiden's sleeve mean "war" in Chinese (pronounced "wu") and "thunder" in Japanese, respectively.[32] The head that occasionally appears after an uppercut and says "Toasty" is the digitized head of Dan Forden, who worked on the sound and music for the game. According to John Tobias, any time one of the MK devs won, they'd yell "You're Toast!" Then it became "Toasted!", and then "Toasty!" Friendships and Babalities were added in light of the controversy surrounding MK1's violence. When Shang Tsung was granted a youthful body, Tobias sketched out the transformation from wizened old man to a spry 19-year-old. A demonic creature was also sketched, representing Shang Tsung's true form, which we never see in the game. Noob Saibot backwards spells Boon and Tobias, who are the names of the principal game designers (Ed Boon and John Tobias, respectively). Due to time constraints, Curt Chiarelli used the Goro mold for Kintaro.[104] Tony Goskie drew and animated the flying dragons in MKII using a program called DPaint.[105] The MK story that we know today didn’t solidify until MKII with the introduction of Shao Kahn and the Outworld.[164] Baraka's blades were made of a reflective cardboard material.[31] Cage's trademark sunglasses were purchased at a local SportMart store for "about $13."[31] The leather jacket Cage wears in his versus screen portrait is manufactured by Victory Sports Inc. of Saginaw, Michigan.[31] ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── References are numbered in [brackets]. An episode of G4TV's Icons (S3E13) mentions an April 1993 release, while Wikipedia says June 1993 and cites the aforementioned episode (this is why I don't trust Wikipedia and do my own research). Alternatively, I decided to piece together a timeline based on various MKII FAQs that were posted on Usenet at the time. While not precise, it paints a better picture as to what revisions people were actually playing at the time. ► Revision 1.0 Released ??? ► Revision 1.1 Released November, 1993 • First version released to the public even though unfinished. (Midway was pressured due to the release of Capcom's Super Street Fighter II.) • Free Play enabled by default. • Contained almost all moves and approximately 9 Fatalities (Friendships/Babalities/Stage Fatalities missing completely). • Kintaro and Shao Kahn nearly impossible to defeat without cheesing (Kintaro could be beat by repeatedly pressing a punch button throughout the fight, Shao Kahn only by throwing missile weapons.) • Shao Kahn, Kano, and Sonya are missing from Kahn's Arena stage. • No character endings. • Several sounds missing. • Shang Tsung could walk on the ceiling. • Kung Lao is extremely buggy, walls can block Hat Toss. • High score missing (Longest Winning Streaks). • Certain characters use alternate colors by default. • 2-player Vs. screen says "Battlezone" instead of "Kombat Zone". • You cannot throw the CPU. • Fight ladder is static. • Player 2 always has the 2nd palette. • P2 Button 6 crashes the game (not used). • Briefly locks up/No announcement if character(s) remain unchosen. • Dan 'Toasty' Forden's face is missing during "Toasty!" shout. ► Revision 1.4 Released December, 1993 • Mileena's Ground Roll added. • Kung Lao's Diving Kick added. • Sub-Zero could do the first part of his Deep Freeze Fatality during a match. • Danger indicator added. • This version contained many but not all aspects of Revision 2.1. Since Revision 1.4 was not widely circulated, those changes will be listed under Revision 2.1. ► Revision 2.1 Released January, 1994 • First 'official' release version. • Intro text slightly changed. ("Only seven warriors... hands of Liu Kang", was originally "But seven warriors would not allow it.") • Character endings and credits added. • Dan 'Toasty' Forden's face added. • Computer intelligence increased. • Almost all Fatalities added. • Friendships and Babalities added. • The Pit II/Kombat Tomb stage Fatalities added. • Smoke and Jade added. • Kintaro and Shao Kahn were easier to defeat. • Kintaro and Shao Kahn could be defeated by keeping them up in the corner with repeated punches. • Shang Tsung's repeated flaming skull move fixed. • Reptile's slide added. • Could crash the game through baby brutalization. • Doing Shang Tsung's soul stealing Fatality against Jax could sometimes crash the game. ► Revision 3.1 Released February, 1994 • More blood added (e.g., when opponent is punched in the face, Kung Lao's Hat Toss). • Dead Pool stage Fatality added. • Noob Saibot added. • Raiden's uppercut Fatality added. • Kung Lao's Friendship added. • Computer intelligence increased. • Computer can do missile weapons in mid air. • Babality/Friendship glitch fixed. • Repeated punches in the corner fixed. • Kitana's multiple fan lifts in the corner fixed. • Sub-Zero's freeze - punch - freeze - punch... fixed. • Scorpion's spear - uppercut - spear - uppercut... fixed. • Pictures of the creators added after the credits. • Revolution X and DCS ads added. • Comic and CD offer shows picture of CD. ╔──────────────────────────╗ ─┤ 9.11 - Operations Manual ├──────────────────────────────────────────────── ╚──────────────────────────╝ ╔────────────────────────╗ ─┤ 9.12 - Quick Reference ├────────────────────────────────────────────────── ╚────────────────────────╝ ╔─────────────────╗ ─┤ 9.13 - Epilogue ├───────────────────────────────────────────────────────── ╚─────────────────╝ ┌────────────────────────────┐ ─┘ 9.13-1 - Character Endings └────────────────────────────────────────────── ┌───────────────────────┐ ─┘ 9.13-2 - Game Credits └───────────────────────────────────────────────────
